Project “Nawat”

In 2025, Zenobia Organization implemented a project titled “Nawat” in the city of Aleppo, in response to the transitional phase the city is undergoing following Syria’s liberation from the former regime. Supported by ICAN, the project spanned six months, from January to June 2025, with the goal of empowering women psychologically and socially and enhancing their roles in the processes of change and decision-making — starting with supporting family stability and emergency interventions, and leading to capacity building and skills development for young women.

The project stemmed from Zenobia’s belief that women must be at the forefront of change, especially in light of the structural, social, and economic challenges imposed by years of conflict — from the loss of breadwinners to the marginalization and oppression endured under the previous regime.

The project included an integrated series of activities targeting young women through specialized training programs focused on:

  • Introduction to civil society work with a focus on the role of women in social change.
  • Understanding the local context and an introductory overview of community conflict sensitivity.
  • How to implement activities and build community initiatives.

Psychosocial support sessions were also conducted for women affected by the conflict, helping them regain self-confidence, strengthen their psychological and social resilience, and enhance their roles as active agents in rebuilding society.

Needs assessment surveys were carried out for women, and in-kind assistance was provided to the most vulnerable families to help stabilize their living conditions.

The project concluded with the development of a research paper assessing the essential and daily needs of Syrian women and the challenges they face in the post-regime phase. This paper serves as a knowledge reference that amplifies women’s voices and guides future efforts toward more effective and inclusive responses.
